Maternal and Newborn Health Clinic: El Cruce de Arroyo Hondo

Jimena Fransua and Yuliana Francais Fransua

Jimena is 30 years old and Yuliana Francais Fransua is 2 months old

Jimena and her baby, JulianaJimena was brought in to the Infante Sano clinic by a friend who had heard about the services through the community health comité. Her first check up was at 13 weeks (pregnant). She had been pregnant 3 times before, but didnt carry any to term. During her prenatal checkup, Dr Pimentel found that she had high blood pressure induced by the pregnancy; which she thinks may have caused the deaths of the other unborn babies.

"JulianaJimena, like many of Dr Pimentel’s patients, has very few resources. The Infante Sano clinic has helped her with medicines, labs, and sonographs that she has needed. She was admitted various times in to the local public hospital in Bani due to her high blood pressure. At 34 weeks, Dr Pimentel sent Jimena to a maternal/child hospital in Santo Domingo to have a cesarean section. She referred Jimena for a better maternal/child prognostic. Currently both mother and daughter are in good general health.

AltagraciasInfante Sano has helped many people in my community. A few times when I didnt have the money to pay for tests, they helped me by covering the costs. I have also had the opportunity to work with Infante Sano. I have learned so much and have made many new friends. I am a member of the local health committee, and have been working with the doctor and health promoter in the IS clinic organizing and filing patient records. I have also been able to serve the community as a health worker. I now feel more integrated in my community and have a higher self-esteem. I have always dreamed of someday becoming a doctor. Now, after working with the doctors, health promoters and others at Infante Sano, I know that I can make it happen."

Yaquelin with Mariani and LisaniInfante Sano has helped me and my family so much. Sometimes I come here to the clinic with no money, and they still see me and give me medicine. I came here while I was pregnant and they were so nice to me and gave me prenatal vitamins. I am so happy that there is a clinic here now. I used to have to travel to Fundacion and pay for transportation, now I can just walk to see the doctor. The doctor and health promoter treat me and my daughters so well. I am very happy with the services and will always bring my daughters here, I will come back for prenatal visits if I become pregnant again."

Yaquelin with Mariani and LisaniIt has been like a dream working with Infante Sano, helping to attend to the patients, performing home visits and educating fellow community members through educational talks. They have trained me as a community health worker and given me the opportunity to work with a variety of people from different backgrounds. When people don't have money to pay for their medicine or consultation, IS helps out. They have helped me personally through trainings and a small stipend for my work in the clinic. I know if I ever have a problem I can count on them. I have so much confidence in all the people working with Infante Sano, I know that they are always more than willing to help me.""
